Absolutely nothing! Not really, but I just had to you know?
Believe it or not, pain is one of the many reasons we are able to live long healthy lives. Without pain, our body’s defense system would be incomplete and we wouldn’t be able to survive very long.
Imagine if you had a thumb tack in your heel and you were able to walk around all day without feeling pain. Eventually you would develop a large enough wound that bacteria would be able to enter blood stream which could eventually lead to death!
Aside from keeping us alive, what other roles does pain play in our day-to-day life?
It provides us a warning sign that something is wrong and we need to address it
It prevents us from doing further damage to our body
Imagine if after partially tearing your Achilles’ tendon you were pain free. You might continue to do the activity that lead to the tear which could lead to a complete tear!
It provides an opportunity for us to address physical deficits to avoid further injury in the future
It provides a contrasting sensation to feeling good so we can be thankful for our health when we are not in pain!
Although being in pain sucks, understanding the importance of pain can help relieve some of the mental burden associated with being in pain. Next time you are recovering from an injury or in pain, try to find something positive to focus on to help motivate you to find your path back to health!
